Module 1Tasks - Internet Tools

Internet Tools

Not ever using these tools before and not hearing all the words, i found it hard to understand what everything meant. After looking at a few sites, not finding much that made sense to me, i came across on that gave me a bit of a better understanding.

http://www.visualware.com/resources/tutorials/tracert.html

I still don't know what 'hops' means. Understand its a measurement of some sort. I took more time on this one to understand than the rest of them. I finally think i have a good understanding though.

Here are a few of the results i came across.

Results from: Centralops.net

So there is a total of 19 'hops' there. I understand that the last one (19) is just the confirmation of the host is replying.... Correct me if i am wrong.

Here it is telling me that it is an avg. of 246ms

Results from: Network-Tools.com

This is saying 17 hops.

And you can see the avg. time there is 248.5ms.

After seeing a few threads in our discussions board and seeing people posting that they were writing down how long it took from there own PC, i had to find out how to do that. I remember seeing one of my friends go to the command prompt to do something once, so i tried there. Jackpot!!!

So on there it gave me a clearer view of the path it takes to get from my PC to curtin. The results i got from my PC are: 19 hops and avg. time of 56ms

As everyone else has had a problem with pinging webct site you can see my results for the curtin.edu.au above for that.

The IP address i really came to get was 136.7.134.10

Module 1Tasks - FTP

FTP

So FTP most people know about. I know of it myself from loading web pages onto the internet. There are alot of things i don't know about it, as all i wanted to do when i used it was to get my page up and running. Unfortunately i ended up removing it cos i didn't like it and never spent time on updating it.

So moving through my learning's on FTP has been very rewarding for myself and i feel that things make a lot more sense on how it works.

Wikipedia describes FTP as this:

Quote

"
FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to connect two computers over the Internet so that the user of one computer can transfer files and perform file commands on the other computer."

So here are my findings with the task:

Accessing recall.curtin.edu.au

The readme file, wasn't that hard to find.

The answer to all our questions ^^

In closing FTP is a major part of our internet use. Mainly used behind the scenes and most commonly used for the uploading of a website to the internet. FTP can have many uses and cant wait to exploit them all.

Module 1Tasks - Telnet

TELNET

So here it is...

I knew nothing about Telnet, i really don't know if i still do. I know it was more common back in the early days and seems to be popular in away of using for data base searches for like libraries and government organisations. I am not sure if i will have much use for this but i suppose with knowledge comes rewards.

I found this site:
http://www.walthowe.com/navnet/faq/telnet.html#telnetuse

It helped me understand it a little more with the FAQ's. This site is a little old and not updated. Most of the links don't work. The information that is there was very helpful to myself to understand a bit more.

Here are my findings in doing the task.

That picture isn't to clear... But that is the email from the Deakin library on the search for Bennahum's Books. With that i could answer the question in the self test.

For those who cant see the answer is "Managed care : financial, legal, and ethical M"

I didn't find that i could use TELNET for much myself. As i have never heard of TELNET till i started studying this course i am sure i will find use for it. Or if someone could give me hints on how to use for personal gain would be great

First Post!!!

Preparing and First Moments of Study

Hi, I am greatly looking forward to my study and everything here looks so interesting. I am studying Bachelor of Arts (Internet studies) at Curtin University of Technology. This Blog is for my work on NET11. Everything seems so interesting and exciting and i cant wait till i know it all. For now i consider i know not much at all after reading some of the modules and a little confused at times.

So finally i think i am getting my head around all of this. I have been looking at the introduction and started to have a look at module 1. At first i am scratching my head, i am like huh. Now i realise what it is i have to do....I think :s. Well what i think it is, studying the modules then doing the task, yea i guess we all figured that. From what i can see also a lot of outside sourcing from what we are giving in the tasks and modules.

As being a person who felt i know a lot about this kinda of stuff, i am coming to the realisation that i don't really know anything. So what i have to do and what we all have to do, i guess, is a majority of our study outside of the Curtin set tasks. Some of you are probably read this and going, like duh. Some of you are probably reading this and don't have a clue what i am saying or trying to say, well at least i do..i think.

So what i will do now is restart my course knowing my faults when i first started off. I wont try and shortcut or do things the easy way, it is time for Brendan to go back to school mode, not that i was ever there before :s.
